以前からディスクの信頼性を研究し、こまめに報告されていた NetAppの
Jon Garrett Elerathさんの博士論文が見つかりました (入学：2002年)。

"This paper presents a comprehensive reliability model that accounts
for numerous failure causes for today's hard disk drives, allows proper
representation of repair and restoration, and does not rely on the
assumption of a HPP for the RAID group."
一般的に、まともな博士論文はその一冊で閉じているので、何故研究が必要
なのか等のバックグランドや過去の研究をまじめにサーベイし、それらと
自分の研究のどこが違い、何がオリジナルかを議論した章があるはずです。
研究の新規性の理解はとても難しいですが、現状を知りたい時はこのような
章の存在はありがたいです (個人的にはダブルスペースは好きくないです)。

ADvanced Systems Laboratory, University of Wisconsin-Madison
の研究も NetAppのデータを使用しています (直接は重なっていないようです)。
残念ながら、Lakshmi Bairavasundaram氏 (現 NetApp) の博士論文
"Characteristics, Impact and Tolerance of Partial Disk Failures", 2008
は公開されていないようです。大学図書館でも見つかりませんでした。
