"Regular LEDs can be turned into optical WLAN with only a few
additional components thanks to visible light communication
(in short, VLC). The lights are then not just lighting up, they
also transfer data. They send films in HD quality to your iPhone
or laptop, with no loss in quality, quickly and safely."

"... since scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute for
Telecommunications, Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI in Berlin,
Germany, have developed a new transfer technology for video data
within the scope of the OMEGA project of the EU, its
implementation in real life is getting markedly closer. At the
end of May, the scientists were able to present the results of
the project in Rennes, France. They were able to transfer data
at a rate of 100 megabits per second (Mbit/s) without any losses,
using LEDs in the ceiling that light up more than ten square
meters (90 square feet). The receiver can be placed anywhere
within this radius, which is currently the maximum range.

"... today announced the release of GlusterFS 3.3 beta 2 which
includes compatibility for Apache Hadoop. This latest enhancement
to GlusterFS uses the standard file system APIs available in Hadoop
to provide a new storage option for Hadoop deployments. With this
new feature, GlusterFS is the first open source, POSIX-compliant
file and object storage solution that works with Hadoop. Compatible
with existing MapReduce-based applications and with the ability
to co-exist with HDFS, this new functionality opens up data within
Hadoop deployments to any file- or object-based application,
providing a broad new range of options for big data deployments."

inherent in exascale (and beyond). This workshop will be essential
in molding our path forward in hardware and software architectures
design space exploration, including simulation and emulation modeling
and their role in developing and implementing abstract machine models.
Moreover, we believe that such methodologies will prove insightful
in discovering what could and should be included or changed in next
and future generation hardware. Scholars from both DOE and non-DOE
communities will participate. Together we will identify machine
abstractions, their idealized primitives, and view of memory. It will
be informative to discuss and debate the realization of these
abstractions. Moreover, given an existing real system and/or subsystem,
how do we do explain its machine abstraction and would this abstraction
be sufficient to explain the performance attributes of exascale?"

was started. Four teams were funded to research and develop ExtremeScale
designs. Various computer vendors have claimed that they are investigating
the designs of exascale computers (IBM, HP and SGI). Several DOE labs are
also investigating exascale designs (LBL, Sandia). The purpose of
this workshop is to address the hardware and software architecture
